    In recognition of his contributions to Daoism, Zhang Daoling was posthumously honored as the first Celestial Master, and his temple, known as the Mausoleum of Zhang Daoling, became an important pilgrimage site for Daoist practitioners.
    In 142 CE, Zhang Daoling announced that Laozi had appeared to him, and commanded him to rid the world of decadence and establish a new state consisting only of the "chosen people". Zhang became the first Celestial Master, and began to spread his newly founded movement throughout the province of Sichuan.
    The Xiang'er, a commentary on the Tao Te Ching preserved today in a sixth-century manuscript, is traditionally ascribed to Zhang Daoling's authorship and even if not his work may reflect his teachings. Zhang is said to have died on Mount Qingcheng in 156 during the reign of Emperor Huan of Han at the purported age of 123.
