    Chaetostoma species, also known as rubbernose plecs, are commonly seen fish that can be quite hardy given proper care. Despite some mystery surrounding their true identity, they are commonly sold in shops. They are sometimes misidentified due to their similar appearance to other species.
    The genus Chaetostoma is not straightforward to identify, but as a general rule, the species has spines behind the gill-cover (interopercular odontodes), no plates on the abdomen, and aside from C. platyrhynchus also lack plates on the snout edge.
