Danainae is a subfamily of the family Nymphalidae, the brush-footed butterflies. It includes the Daniadae, or milkweed butterflies, who lay their eggs on various milkweeds on which their larvae ( caterpillars) feed, as well as the clearwing butterflies ( Ithomiini ), and the tellervini. [1]
The Danaini are a tribe of brush-footed butterflies ( family Nymphalidae). The tribe's type genus Danaus contains the well-known monarch butterfly ( D. plexippus) and is also the type genus of the tribe's subfamily, the milkweed butterflies (Danainae).
With the exception of the monarch, most of the 157 known Danainae species are limited to tropical regions in Malaysia, Africa, South America, and the Greater Antilles. The adults of several species exhibit both short-distance migrations during the dry and wet seasons and social clustering behavior.
