La Guardia de Jaén or Guardia de Jaén, La (official name), and the old Mentesa Bastia at Iberic and Roman era, is a small city located in the province of Jaén at western end of Sierra Mágina, on the Cerro de San Marcos, near the promontory of Cerro de San Cristóbal, from where it dominates the valley of the river Guadalbullón.
La Guardia de Jaén is a small village situated southeast of the capital of the province of Jaén. The settlement originally served to defend the city, hence its name ‘guardia’ meaning ‘guard’. It has about 4980 inhabitants.
It was one of Andalusia"s most important villages during the Iberian period. The village reached its maximum splendour under the Romans. It received the name of Gran Mentesa, in the Tarraconensis province. There were palaces, temples, baths. Its population was of about 50,000.
